Liuzhou Industrial Museum

The Liuzhou Industrial Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Liuzhou Industrial Museum is located at the eastern end of Wenchang Bridge in Liuzhou City. Integrating industrial history displays, industrial heritage preservation, science popularization, and tourism and leisure, the museum covers a total site area of nearly 110,000 square meters, with a total floor space of over 60,000 square meters. It features themed exhibition halls such as the Industrial History Hall and the Eco-Livable Living Hall. As of now, it has collected 6,224 pieces of various sizes of industrial heritage artifacts and 11,645 items of various documents and images. The Liuzhou Industrial Museum was completed and opened to the public on May 1, 2012, filling the gap of industrial museums in Guangxi and becoming the first comprehensive urban industrial museum in Guangxi and even the whole country.

After its completion, the museum will showcase the development journey of Liuzhou’s industry over the past 100 years—from nothing to something, from weak to strong—reflecting the “Liuzhou Spirit” of hard work and independent innovation.

Oil paintings. In the scene displays, oil paintings play an important role, even achieving the effect of being almost indistinguishable from reality. For example, for the “Liujiang” brand car, known as the “First Car of Guangxi,” next to the real vehicle, various resin sculptures depict scenes of workers designing and hand-hammering the car body, while the background oil painting shows a “manufacturing workshop” filled with many finished cars. In the display area of the development scene of China’s first-generation loader, the ZL435 model, the master painter is touching up the details of the painting.

In 1931, the Liuzhou Machinery Factory was renamed the Guangxi Machinery Factory and began manufacturing and assembling airplanes. In the spring of 1937, Zhu Rongzhang, an engineer who had previously worked at Boeing in the United States, used a 750-horsepower aircraft engine from the warehouse to successfully assemble a single-seat fighter plane. After a successful test flight, Bai Chongxi, a leader of the Guangxi Clique, named it the “Zhu Rongzhang.” After the outbreak of the War of Resistance, planes mass-produced based on the “Zhu Rongzhang” achieved remarkable success in air battles against Japanese forces.

Automobiles

A “charcoal-fueled car” in the exhibition hall also has an interesting backstory. In December 1933, Liuzhou Machinery Factory modified two charcoal engines using a gas generator they developed, and assembled one of them into a car that ran on charcoal. The car was driven to Nanning for public viewing. The birth of the charcoal-fueled car marked the beginning of automobile production in Guangxi.

The Liuzhou Industrial Museum leverages Liuzhou’s rich industrial heritage to build an industrial-themed cultural brand that integrates industrial history displays, industrial product exhibitions, industrial design creativity, and industrial talent training. It blends traditional industry with modern creativity, allowing visitors to explore the path of Liuzhou’s industrial development through visiting, leisure, experience, and interaction, thereby boosting industrial tourism in Liuzhou and driving the development of the city’s cultural industry.

As a major industrial hub in China, Liuzhou’s industrial heritage bears witness to the process of industrialization and urbanization in Guangxi and even across China. By constructing an industrial history museum, Liuzhou will further enrich the historical and cultural connotations of this famous historical and cultural city and promote the development of its cultural tourism industry.
