Former Residence of He Shu

The former residence of He Shu is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The former residence of He Shu is located in Group 3, Shouzhou Village, Taipingwei Township, Leiyang City.

Built in 1898, the residence covers a construction area of 332 square meters, features a brick-and-wood structure with a tiled roof, and is a typical residential building from southern Hunan during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The structure of the house has largely retained its original appearance. It is currently maintained and used by his nephew.

In 2019, the former residence of He Shu was approved as part of the tenth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Hunan Province.

A native of Leiyang County (now Leiyang City), Hunan Province, born in 1898. He began attending private school at the age of six. After graduating from high school in 1917, he was recommended by the county to study at Hengyang Provincial No. 3 Normal School. Witnessing the oppression of the poor by the wealthy and the disasters caused by years of war, he developed a desire to change the “unjust world.” During the summer vacation, he traveled to Beiping (now Beijing), where he met Mao Zedong, Deng Zhongxia, and others in the library of Peking University and became close friends.
