Malanzui Site

The Malanzui Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Malanzui Site is situated in Bailuqiao Village, Bailuqiao Town, Hanshou County. It dates to the Neolithic Age, spans an area of approximately 2,500 square meters, and has a cultural layer about 1.2 meters thick. Excavated items include stone axes and pottery fragments—among them, red-coated black pottery, sand-tempered red pottery, and gray pottery—adorned with incised, stamped, pricked, and cord-marked decorations. Artifacts such as basins, pots, and tripods represent a typical site of the Daxi Culture. This site was discovered during the second national cultural relics survey in 1987 and was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit by the city government in 1997.

It is now preliminarily identified as a Neolithic Daxi Culture settlement site, dating back 5,600 to 6,500 years, making it the largest, most culturally rich, and best-preserved ancient site discovered in Hanshou County to date. Additionally, ritual pits from the Eastern Zhou period were unearthed in the upper layers of the site, yielding a large number of relatively intact Eastern Zhou pottery pieces. These findings provide more detailed physical evidence for further research on human activities, production, and hydrological information during the Eastern Zhou period.

The Malanzui Site is an extremely important cultural site in northwestern Hunan and even within the entire province. Its basic information has been included in the "Cultural Relics Atlas of China," compiled by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. Its significance is profound—it offers insights into ancient human conditions, the origins of cities, as well as details about ancient people’s lives, production methods, climate, and hydrology.

In 2019, the Malanzui Site was listed in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Bailuqiao Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Hanshou County. Established as Bailuqiao Town in 1950, it was restructured as a township in 1956, turned into a commune in 1958, reverted to a township in 1984, and became a town again in 1994. Located in the southeastern part of the county, it is 40 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 49.3 square kilometers with a population of 20,000, the town government is headquartered in Bailuqiao. National Highway 319 and county roads run through the area.
