Ancient Armor Removal Pavilion

The Ancient Armor Removal Pavilion is a cultural heritage site protected by Hunan Province.

The Ancient Armor Removal Pavilion in Shaoyang was built to commemorate Zhang Fei. Legend has it that during the Three Kingdoms period, when Zhang Fei was stationed in Zhaoling City, he once patrolled the streets and arrived at Shajiantou, where he saw people fleeing in panic. The county magistrate’s eldest son had just returned from hunting and, wielding his horsewhip, struck out at everyone he met. Seeing Zhang Fei daring to block his way, he lashed out at him fiercely with his whip. Zhang Fei then let out a thunderous shout, wrested the whip from him with a sweep of his arm, pulled the young man off his horse, and knocked him to the ground. When the county magistrate heard the news and came with troops to rescue his son, Zhang Fei thrust his eight-foot serpent spear into a stone drum by the roadside and hung his armor on it. Then, standing bare-handed in the middle of the road, he roared at the magistrate, “Come over here, and I’ll cut you down first!” That shout terrified the magistrate. Then, with swift strokes of his blade, Zhang Fei executed the evil magistrate and his son, saving the people from their misery. The local residents later built a statue of Zhang Fei and erected this pavilion at the very spot where he had donned his armor, naming it the “Armor Removal Pavilion,” for future generations to admire.
