Known as the “Ancestral Halls of the World,” Hunan’s Dongkou County preserves over a hundred ancient ancestral hall complexes. These structures are well-preserved, exquisitely built, and stunningly beautiful. Each ancestral hall is like a radiant pearl, inlaid among the green mountains and clear waters of southwestern Hunan, yet it has long remained “a hidden jewel unknown to the world.” In recent years, as 19 ancestral halls have been successively listed as national and provincial cultural relics protection units, the beauty of Dongkou’s ancestral halls has gradually been discovered by the public.
The siting of Dongkou’s ancestral halls all deliberately emphasizes feng shui, with each constructed against mountains and beside water. The most breathtaking is arguably the Xiao Family Ancestral Hall, located on Fulongzhou Island in the Pingxi River to the southwest of the county town. Towering ancient trees crown the head of the island, while the resplendent image of the ancestral hall is reflected in the clear flowing waters—movement and stillness enhance each other, creating a delightful harmony.
The Dongkou ancestral halls employ various art forms such as stone carvings, wood carvings, clay sculptures, and painted decorations, showcasing diverse techniques and ingenious craftsmanship. The wooden carvings adorning the Jiangtan Wang Family Ancestral Hall include both grand, imposing works like carved beams and painted rafters, as well as delicate miniature pieces. The finest among them are the wood carvings on the gate tower of the ancestral tablet hall in the Ancestors’ Hall, featuring masterpieces such as “Two Dragons Fighting for the Pearl,” “A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix,” “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea,” and “Lions, Elephants, and Qilins.” These are rare top-tier masterpieces of folk wood carving art in Hunan.
These ancestral hall complexes also serve as tangible records of the glorious history of China’s modern revolution, making them incredibly precious. In December 1935, the main force of the Red Second Army passed through Dongkou, setting up its headquarters and main camp on Fulongzhou Island at the Xiao Family Ancestral Hall. Today, two red slogans can still be clearly seen on the western wall of the ancestral hall: “Carry out mass movements against Japan and Chiang Kai-shek; the Red Army fights for the liberation of the working masses” and “Follow He Long in the revolution, overthrow the local tyrants and evil gentry.”
