Chenhu Wetland is a provincial-level nature reserve.

In the remote XIAOSI Township in the southwestern frontier of Caidian District lies the vast Chenhu, a rare expanse that has been nominated as a wetland reserve. This area is rich in natural resources and historically famed for its “three arrivals”: wild geese and ducks flying in from the sky, fish, shrimp, crabs, and clams swimming in from the water, and reeds, wild grasses, water chestnuts, and wild lotus growing out of the land. Covering a total area of 60 square kilometers, its water body spans 18 square kilometers, making it the largest natural wetland in the province and the only precious wetland in the country adjacent to a major metropolis. It is home to millions of rare migratory birds, including large numbers of first- and second-class protected species such as white swans and black swans. While emphasizing conservation, the area also offers long-distance birdwatching around the reserve. This not only raises public awareness of ecological protection but also helps establish a unique tourist route for Wuhan, attracting overseas visitors—making it a valuable asset for promoting international tourism in both our district and the entire city. XIAOSI Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Caidian District, Wuhan. In 1958, it belonged to Xingfu Commune; in 1961, XIAOSI Commune was established; in 1976, it was renamed Zhuru Commune; and in 1984, XIAOSI Township was founded. Located in the southwestern part of the district, it is 35 kilometers from the district government. Covering an area of 132.9 square kilometers with a population of 16,000, it has direct road access to the urban area. The township administers seven village committees: GANGZHOU, HANHONG, YUQIAO, LUOHAN, JIUGOU, WAGOU, and HONGNAN. Local enterprises are mainly engaged in breeding and processing. Agriculture focuses on grain production, including rice and cotton. It hosts the Chenhu Fish Farm and a nationally renowned reed production base. It is also a veteran revolutionary base area.
