Introduction to the Luo-Li Tomb Cluster

This is an ancient tomb site from the Three Kingdoms and Song dynasties, located 400 meters northwest of Luo-Li Bay in Luo-Li Village, Duan'dian Town, Huarong District. The Luo-Li Primary School lies 200 meters to the east of the tomb cluster, National Highway 316 to the south, Luojiashangwan Village 1,000 meters to the west, and Zhujia Port 200 meters to the north. The total area is approximately 6,000 square meters. The tomb cluster was discovered during a 1970 cultural relics survey. The tombs are arranged in a north-south orientation, spaced 5–15 meters apart. Remnants of earthen mounds are still visible on some of the tombs. Based on the exposed structures, most are rectangular, vaulted brick-chamber tombs. The chamber structure follows a “three flat bricks, one row of headers” pattern, with the tomb floor paved in a herringbone design. The vaulted ceilings were built using wedge-shaped bricks, and the tomb bricks are decorated with coarse rope patterns and linen textures. Six Dynasties tombs excavated in the 1970s yielded artifacts such as celadon washing basins, tables, mortars, mills, and spoons. In the 1980s, additional items from the Tang and Song dynasties were collected, including celadon cosmetic boxes, pots, and bowls. Among them, a celadon lotus-shaped cosmetic box stands out — it has thin walls and is coated with a yellowish-brown glaze that shines brightly. Notably, a pair of mandarin ducks on the lid are exquisitely crafted, vivid and lifelike, making this piece a true masterpiece of Tang and Song dynasty relics.

The tomb site remains relatively intact, though some parts have been damaged. The unearthed relics hold significant scientific value for studying the politics, economy, culture, social life, and material culture of the Six Dynasties and Tang-Song periods. The protective boundary of the tomb cluster covers the burial area itself, with a 100-meter buffer zone extending outward in all directions. On November 4, 2003, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the municipal government.
