Introduction: Laojun Rock is the earliest and the only discovered rock cave on Wudang Mountain. At the center of the cave is a carving of Laozi, the Supreme Old Lord. The statue of Laozi sits in a dignified posture, in a celestial disc-like position. Although its face has been damaged, the overall sculpture still exhibits distinct Tang Dynasty stone carving characteristics. On the left side of the Laojun Rock cave, there is also a group of cliff inscriptions featuring carvings such as “The Prince Enters Wudang” and “The Nine Immortals of Penglai.” Such a large-scale cave and cliff inscription complex, incorporating texts from four different dynasties — the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing — is a rare physical relic for the study of Wudang Mountain’s religious and historical development. The existing site of Laojun Rock covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters. It was originally designed to replicate the dwelling place of the highest deities in Taoism, namely the residences of the Yuanshi Tianzun, Lingbao Tianzun, and Daode Tianzun, also known as the “Three Pure Ones Realm.”
