Tianzhu Peak

Tianzhu Peak is the main peak of Mount Wudang, with an elevation of 1,612.1 meters. Its summit rises abruptly and stands tall amidst the surrounding peaks, earning the name "Pillar Holding Up the Sky." Tianzhu Peak is also called Golden Summit due to the Golden Hall on its top. The precarious rocks of Tianzhu Peak stand isolated and steep, with faint fissures running down as if from an upside-down wine jar. It is also called Wine Jar Peak. To its left is the Changing Clothes Terrace, to its right is the Evening Facing Peak, and to the north of the stream lies the Hidden Screen Peak.

Legend has it that in ancient times, beside the Nine-Bend Stream of Wuyi Mountain, there lived a kind-hearted old farmer known as "Tian Fu." The rice wine he brewed emitted fragrance for three days and nights. One day, the Eight Immortals passed through Wuyi Mountain and, drawn by the aroma, followed the scent to Tian Fu’s home, where they drank heartily and stayed for several days, reluctant to leave—especially Iron-Crutch Li, who became quite fond of the drink.

When it was time to attend the Peach Banquet in the Heavenly Garden, instead of drinking the heavenly jade nectar, Iron-Crutch Li brought out his gourd and drank the Wuyi rice wine he had brought along. The extraordinary fragrance wafted through the heavens, making all the immortals salivate. The Queen Mother of the West then ordered Iron-Crutch Li and the God of Brewing to go to Wuyi Mountain to buy wine. Tian Fu filled a large jar with the leftover wine from his home and gave it to them.

Iron-Crutch Li, already hindered by his lame leg, was exhausted from the hurried round trip and could hardly walk. He had to let the God of Brewing deliver the wine back first. By the time Iron-Crutch Li arrived, ready to drink his fill, the wine in the jar had already been consumed by the other immortals.

Furious, Iron-Crutch Li raised his crutch and struck the wine jar. With a loud “dong,” the jar cracked in three places, rolled down from the Heavenly Garden, and landed by the Nine-Bend Stream—becoming the Wine Jar Peak we see today.
