Introduction: Commonly known as Golden Flower Tree, Chongxu Hermitage backs onto the Zhongnan Mountains and faces the Danjiangkou Reservoir. Nestled in a sunny and sheltered location, it enjoys tranquility year-round. The name “Chongxu” means “detached and serene.” Built before the Yuan Dynasty and reconstructed during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the hermitage currently features structures such as the Ancestral Master Hall, Imperial Scripture Tower, Lüzu Tower, and Three Officials Pavilion. In front of the hermitage lies an ancient well. Legend has it that during the abdication of Emperor Yao to Emperor Shun, Shun’s stepmother, wishing for her own son to ascend the throne, plotted to kill Shun by ordering him to clean mud from the bottom of the well, planning to bury him alive afterward. However, a crack suddenly appeared in the well, allowing Shun to escape through it. He later became emperor, and the well was thus named Shun’s Well. Beside the ancient well stands an old cypress tree with a diameter of about 1.1 meters. It is said to have been planted by the Tang Dynasty immortal Lü Dongbin. With its sturdy trunk and twisted branches, the tree bursts into full bloom every summer, earning it the name Golden Flower Tree. It is one of the scenic wonders of Mount Wudang.
