Renwei Temple

Introduction:

Some Taoist structures were built at Renwei Temple as early as the Yuan Dynasty, and major renovations were carried out in the 10th year of the Yongle era during the Ming Dynasty. Like all Taoist temples on Mount Wudang, Renwei Temple primarily consists of key buildings such as the main hall, the Dragon-Tiger Hall, and the Spirit Official Hall. These halls were destroyed during the Ming Dynasty, leaving only ruins that allow visitors to imagine their former scale.

Legend has it that during the temple's operation, some lawless individuals who were obsessed with women were found hiding attractive female worshippers. This was considered a grave violation of both Taoist precepts and imperial decrees. When the emperor learned of this, he dispatched the Imperial Guards with troops to suppress the culprits in the mountains. The army buried these wrongdoers alive, then plowed them to death with iron plows before burning down Renwei Temple as a warning for future generations.
