"For those who don’t have enough time to visit the sea, going to Danjiangkou City to see the “cloned” or “knockoff” version of the “Little Pacific” is a great alternative. The so-called “Little Pacific,” in a broad sense, refers to the water area at the confluence of the Han River and the Dan River, encompassing Danjiangkou and Yunxian in Hubei Province and Xichuan in Henan Province. In a narrow sense, it refers to the waters of the upper Danjiangkou Reservoir located at the border between Liangshuihe Town in Danjiangkou City and Xichuan County in Henan Province. This area features a relatively expansive water surface, with vast misty waves resembling an artificial ocean, thus humorously dubbed the “Little Pacific” on land. Famed as the “No. 1 Artificial Lake in Asia,” the Danjiangkou Reservoir serves as the water source for China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project’s middle route. It has a net reservoir area of 740 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of 29.05 billion cubic meters. The reservoir area boasts stunning natural scenery. From the city’s dock, passengers can take a cruise ship. As the ship gradually leaves the Danjiangkou Dam, the surrounding landscapes become fully visible. The narrowest part of the reservoir is only about a hundred meters wide, with peaks on both banks interspersed, creating a seamless blend of lake and mountain views. After about an hour’s voyage, you’ll enter this boundless and magical “man-made sea.” Leaning on the railing, you’ll be greeted by a sudden expanse of water—vast blue waves, a unified sky and water surface, and endless misty waves. Being there feels like stepping into the ocean, making it a truly enchanting experience. Alternatively, you can take a land route: cross the Second Danjiang Bridge, head to Liangshuihe Town, then drive 6 kilometers toward Bailong Spring to reach the entrance of the Little Pacific. As one of the rare expansive water bodies in China’s inland regions, the “Little Pacific” is the widest area in the Danjiangkou Reservoir. Its main attraction is Baixi Island. The island’s original stone forest has been submerged, but the 200,000 planted trees—such as peach, apricot, and orange trees—still remain. With the completion of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, Baixi Island will become a peninsula and isolated islet. Plans are underway to build floating bridges between the two parts of Baixi Island and at two other connecting points to the mainland, allowing visitors to stroll across during high water levels. The island will also feature simulated natural environments for raising various birds, creating the reservoir area’s only bird-watching and conservation center. Additionally, a landmark observation tower will be constructed in the scenic area, along with the “Chu Fishing Village” for tasting fresh fish from the Han River and related facilities, forming a unique scenic highlight."
