Macheng Martyrs' Cemetery is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a classic red tourism destination, a patriotic education base, and a national defense education base.

Macheng Martyrs' Cemetery is located at No. 75 Lingyuan Road, downtown Macheng City, Hubei Province. It was built to commemorate the Huangma Uprising and honor the heroic deeds of revolutionary martyrs from the Eyuwan Soviet Area. Macheng is a land steeped in revolutionary history. During the Second Revolutionary Civil War, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, Macheng was an important part of the Eyuwan Base Area and one of the key birthplaces of the Huangma Uprising. It was the founding, formation, or birthplace of the Fourth Red Army, the Fourth Front Red Army, and the 28th Red Army. It also served as an area of activity for the First Red Army, the 11th Red Army, the 7th Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army, the Eastern Hubei Army during the Agrarian Revolution, the New Fourth Army during the anti-Japanese guerrilla campaign, and the Liu-Deng Army during the Dabie Mountains campaign. Over the decades of revolutionary struggle, Macheng produced a large number of revolutionaries and nurtured numerous founding generals such as Marshal Wang Shusheng, Chen Zaidao, Wang Hongkun, and others. From 1955 to 1965 alone, 36 generals from Macheng were awarded military ranks. During the wartime years, 76,300 people from Macheng joined the Red Army, over 7,260 participated in the Long March, and approximately 143,000 sacrificed their lives in battle. The people of Macheng made tremendous sacrifices for the Chinese revolution, including 12,538 registered martyrs after the founding of the People’s Republic.

Macheng Martyrs' Cemetery was initiated in 1977, officially completed in 1979 to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the Huangma Uprising, and underwent major renovation and construction between 2005 and 2007. The site now covers an area of over 130 acres, with a green coverage rate of more than 80%. Major attractions include the Monument to the Martyrs of the Huangma Uprising and the Eyuwan Soviet Area, the Macheng Revolutionary Memorial Hall, the Wang Shusheng Memorial Hall, the Tomb of Marshal Wang Shusheng, the Li Shuxun Martyrs' Memorial Square, and the “Red China” Music Memorial Plaza. The Monument to the Martyrs of the Huangma Uprising and the Eyuwan Soviet Area features inscriptions and calligraphy from Chinese party and state leaders such as -, -, -, and -. The Macheng Revolutionary Memorial Hall and the Wang Shusheng Memorial Hall utilize scene technologies such as sound, light, electricity, sculpture, murals, and virtual imaging to showcase the life stories of 76 martyrs, 44 generals from Macheng, and 86 exemplary figures. The cemetery is a National Key Martyrs’ Memorial Building Protection Unit, a National Defense Education Demonstration Base, a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a Hubei Provincial Patriotic Education Demonstration Base, and one of the 30 premium routes and 100 classic sites of national red tourism. It currently receives over 550,000 visitors annually from across the country and has established partnership relationships with more than 300 organizations nationwide.

Since its completion, the cemetery has hosted visits and inspections by party, government, and military leaders such as Chen Zaidao, Wang Renzhong, Cheng Zihua, Zhang Siqing, Zhang Caiqian, Wang Bicheng, Zhou Xihan, and Yang Ju, who have offered many valuable suggestions for its development. Since its opening, the cemetery has adhered to the principle of “honoring martyrs and educating the public.” As an important patriotic education base, it aims to provide an environment, service, and management of the highest quality, making it a vital site for the public and youth to receive patriotic, revolutionary tradition, and moral education, as well as a key place for commemorating revolutionary martyrs and engaging in red tourism.
