Tomb of Yu Cheng

Located in Tuji’ao Village, Zhangjiapu Town, Macheng City. Yu Cheng (1884–1910), a native of Macheng, was a pioneer of the Xinhai Revolution and the president of the Hubei branch of the Tongmenghui. In 1904, he went to study at Waseda University in Japan. In 1905, he assisted Sun Yat-sen in forming the Tongmenghui. In the winter of 1905, he served as the president of the Hubei branch of the Tongmenghui. In January 1906, he came to Wuhan and worked with Liu Jing’an to recruit new members for the Tongmenghui. In May 1907, due to being wanted by authorities, he returned to Tokyo to assist with the work of the Tongmenghui headquarters. He came back to Wuhan in 1908 to continue revolutionary activities and passed away on February 5, 1910, due to illness. The tomb faces southwest and is situated to the northeast. It features an earthen mound that is 2.5 meters long, 1.5 meters wide, and 1.2 meters high. There are three rectangular brick tombstones, with the central one being taller than the side ones. The surfaces have been plastered with cement. The main inscription records the life of the deceased, while the side stones are inscribed with the characters “Inherit His Will, Revitalize China” in relief. A semicircular worship platform with a diameter of about 9 meters is set in front of the tomb, surrounded by stone-lined embankments. The site holds significant commemorative value and serves as an important subject for patriotic education.
