Peiligang Site

The Peiligang Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

: Located about 8 kilometers northwest of Xinzheng County in the western part of Peiligang Village, covering an area of 20,000 square meters, this is an early Neolithic site. The eastern half is a village site, where people carried out their daily lives at the time; the western half is a clan cemetery with rectangular burial pits. Many valuable artifacts have been unearthed here, mainly stone and pottery items. Representative finds include serrated stone sickles, strip-shaped stone spades, tripod pottery bowls, cylindrical jars, as well as pottery spinning whorls, pottery pig and sheep head sculptures, and other primitive artworks. To date, a total of 114 tombs, one pottery kiln, more than 10 ash pits, and several remnants of cave dwelling foundations have been excavated at the site. This discovery fills a historical gap in China’s early Neolithic period prior to the Yangshao Culture.
