Dongbatou Huanghe Bay Scenic Area. The Yellow River is the cradle of the Chinese nation and the birthplace of Huaxia civilization. Yellow River culture is profound, extensive, and has a long history. The Lankao section of the Yellow River is the last major bend in the winding river, forming a “U” shape. Due to the perilous terrain, it has long been known as the “Tofu Waist.” This stretch of the river features fierce currents, surging waves, and the sound of the river echoing across fragrant bird-filled banks. Standing on the eastern shore and looking west, the poetic imagery of Li Bai’s line, “The waters of the Yellow River come from heaven and rush to the sea, never to return,” immediately comes to life, stirring the heart. The scenery here is spectacular and is one of the iconic landscapes of the Yellow River. Chairman Mao Zedong visited this site twice, in 1952 and 1958, and issued the great call to the nation to “ensure the affairs of the Yellow River are well managed.”

The scenic area mainly includes the Chairman Mao Memorial Pavilion for his Yellow River inspection, the wide expanse of the Yellow River channel, and over 200 acres of suitable fishing waters on the shoals. There is also a stretch of over ten miles of the Yellow River embankment that runs through green fields, fragrant wildflowers, and beautiful scenery, along with tidal flats, wetlands, sand dunes, and sandy mounds within the area. The natural landscape of the scenic area is incredibly diverse and uniquely picturesque, making it an excellent destination for developing eco-tourism, leisure, vacationing, and water recreation. Based on the characteristics of the Dongbatou Yellow River natural landscape and the surrounding regional features, the focus is on developing a signature Yellow River scenic area centered around the middle and lower reaches of the river, showcasing the majestic beauty of the winding Yellow River.

In 1952, when Chairman Mao visited Dongbatou to inspect the Yellow River, he was filled with awe before the surging river and issued the great call to “ensure the affairs of the Yellow River are well managed.” What were once barren lands have now turned into stretches of oasis, with sand dune forests and orchards dotting the landscape. The roaring Yellow River, the lush forests, abundant grain, and rich cultural resources provide unparalleled conditions for the development of tourism, vacationing, and leisure entertainment.

Huanghe Bay Scenic Area is one of the first sites planned for development in our county’s overall tourism development plan. Relying on the Chairman Mao Memorial Pavilion, the natural landscape of Dongbatou on the Yellow River, and the unique geographical feature of the last bend in the winding Yellow River, the scenic area recreates the scene of the Chairman’s Yellow River inspection, as well as the historical floods of the Yellow River in Lankao and the achievements made in Yellow River control after liberation.

Currently, the relocation project of the Chairman Mao Yellow River Inspection Memorial Pavilion has been completed, with landscaping and paving done around the pavilion. Other service and leisure facilities reflecting Yellow River folk customs, as well as dining, vacation, and recreational content, are under construction.
