Huai’an Zhaohua Temple

Huai’an Zhaohua Temple is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Zhaohua Temple is located on West Street in Ancheng Town, Huai’an County, Hebei Province. It was first built in the 25th year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1392), but was later abandoned. It was rebuilt between the 1st and 8th years of the Zhengtong reign (1435–1443).

The temple measures 96 meters from north to south and 38 meters from east to west, with a construction area of 670 square meters. It faces south, and the extant structures include the Mountain Gate, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mahavira Hall, and the Three Great Bodhisattva Hall, all of which are early Ming wooden structures. The Mahavira Hall is the main building of the temple, featuring a width of five bays and a depth of three bays, with a single-eave hip-and-gable roof covered in tiles, covering a construction area of 292 square meters. In the 41st year of the Jiajing reign (1562), murals covering an area of 93 square meters were painted on the four walls of the Mahavira Hall, depicting 47 groups of figures, totaling over 490 individuals. The scale is exceptionally large and of considerable artistic value.
