Hui Lower Mosque

In the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), Imam Ma Zhenjiang and the mosque management committee convened discussions, raising funds to build an initial complex that included the main prayer hall, the north lecture room, and the imam’s office. In 1989, the mosque was expanded with a new structure featuring a rolled-roof portico on the first floor and a “Moon-Gazing Tower” on the second floor. At that time, Nurman Maxian, then Vice President of the China Islamic Association, inscribed the three large characters 清真寺 (“Mosque”) on the lintel above the gate. The mosque can accommodate over a hundred worshippers for Friday prayers. Eight five-meter-high green pillars inlaid with blue ceramic tiles stand tall and majestic, while the upper half of the portico is adorned with floral patterns on its southern, northern, and western sides. The eye is drawn to the three large golden characters “Moon-Gazing Tower,” atop which sits a two-meter-high green dome encrusted with a gleaming treasure bottle and a golden crescent moon reaching toward the clouds. The splendor of these twin towers reflects the characteristics of Arabic architecture, echoing the sanctity of Mecca and adding ethnic charm to this mountain city in western Henan. Additionally, the Ethnic Welfare Building, Women’s Prayer Hall, and Ablution Building were completed and put into use in 1992 and 1993 respectively. Two stone steles have been erected in the mosque: one was installed during Ramadan in 1990, detailing the construction process of the main prayer hall, Moon-Gazing Tower, and main gate by Imams Ma Zhenjiang and his nephew Ma Mingdao; the other, erected in 1994, describes the construction of the two towers.
