The Mao Zedong Statue in Liancun is a classic red tourism attraction.

A natural and unexplained phenomenon.

In August 1975, Tian Shufa, a farmer from the Tianzhuangtianzhuang group of Jinzhuang in Liancun Town, built a three-room earthen house. During the Spring Festival of 1976, he hung in the central room a painting of Chairman Mao Zedong bearing the “Four Greats” (the Great Leader, the Great Teacher, the Great Commander, and the Great Helmsman), with two couplets hanging on either side of the portrait. The upper couplet read: “Carry on the behests of Chairman Mao,” and the lower one: “Follow the orders of Chairman Hua.” Over the years, the portrait and couplets remained hanging for twelve full years. On the eve of the Spring Festival in 1988, Tian Shufa decided to take down the portrait of Chairman Mao and replace it with a central plaque inscribed with Mao Zedong’s poetry. However, when he removed the hanging portrait and tried to put up the newly bought plaque, he found that due to the low ceiling and the long size of the plaque, it couldn’t be fully displayed. As a result, the plaque was never hung. In the spring of 1992, Tian Shufa accidentally noticed that a faint image resembling Chairman Mao's head had emerged at the spot where the portrait had once hung. By autumn, the image had become increasingly clear, and from 1993 onward, it grew sharper and more distinct. News of this spread rapidly by word of mouth—people came in droves from nearby towns within a radius of 30 or 50 li, and even from hundreds or thousands of li away. Every day, five to six thousand visitors came to pay their respects, sometimes reaching over ten thousand. Tourists flocked from as far as the capital, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and nearby provinces, all marveling at the sight.
