Zhouzhong Site

The Zhouzhong Site is a cultural heritage site protected by Henan Province.

The Zhouzhong Site is located in Huanglou Village Committee, 5 kilometers west of Xincai County. It lies 465 meters southeast of Huanglou Village, 540 meters south of Xiaoweizi Village, 705 meters southwest of Huazhuang Village, and borders the Xiao Honghe River to the north. Originally a single continuous site extending from northwest to southeast, it has been fragmented into three sections due to erosion over time. The western part was cut off, and later people referred to the western section as Zhouzhong, the middle as Pingzhong, and the southeastern part as Huangzhong. Zhouzhong is 6 meters high, 56 meters long from east to west, and 47 meters long from north to south; Pingzhong is 90 meters long from east to west and 182 meters long from north to south; Huangzhong is 123 meters long from east to west and 203 meters long from north to south. The total area of the three sites is 44,960 square meters. The shape of the site is irregular, with thick layers of gray soil and cultural strata, a dense distribution of relics, and a long period of continuity. In 1953, the Beijing-based archaeologist Pei Wenzhong visited the site and identified it as a Shang and Zhou period relic.

The Zhouzhong Site is a large cultural relic site spanning various periods including the Shang and Zhou cultures. It was designated as part of the fifth batch of Henan Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units in June 2008.
