Yantai Mountain Scenic Area is home to Asia’s only most complete and densely concentrated cluster of historic foreign consulates from the modern era. It is a landmark attraction in Yantai, a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, the origin of the city’s name, and a National-Level Tourist Attraction.

Yantai Mountain is an iconic scenic area in Yantai and the source of the city’s name. Located at the northern end of the urban area, it is surrounded by sea on three sides, boasts a beautiful environment and captivating scenery. Covering an area of 45 hectares, the site features picturesque landscapes, lush vegetation, clear seawater, and unique rock formations. It is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction, a National Marine Park, and uniquely combines mountain, sea, city, and harbor landscapes. It is the top choice for travelers visiting Yantai. The “Beacon Tower,” built in the 31st year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1398), sits atop the mountain. In ancient times, smoke was released during the day and fires lit at night to warn of Japanese pirates, leading to the naming of the tower as “Yan Tai” (Smoke Terrace)—the origin of the city’s name. In 1861, Yantai became an open port, making it the first trading port in Shandong. Seventeen countries subsequently established consulates around Yantai Mountain. As a result, Yantai Mountain became Asia’s only most complete and densely concentrated cluster of modern-era foreign consulates. Today, the mountain still preserves consulates from six countries—UK, USA, France, Germany, Japan, and Denmark—as well as numerous villas. The scenic area includes attractions such as the China Lock Museum, Bingxin Memorial Hall, Peking Opera Waxwork Museum, Rê Lang Pavilion, Lian Xin Bridge, China’s only century-old holly corridor, Natural Wonder, Dragon King Temple, Beacon Tower, Zhong Lie Memorial Temple, and the Coastal Plank Walk. Visitor Service Center: Located at the east entrance of the scenic area, the Visitor Service Center provides services such as guided tours, basic medical aid, hot water supply, wheelchairs, walking sticks, and luggage storage.

Self-Driving Directions:

Exit from G15 Shenhai Expressway, drive east along South Avenue, then turn north onto Jiefang Road until you reach Yantai Mountain Scenic Area.

Exit from G18 Rongwu Expressway, drive west along Binhai Road to Yantai Mountain Scenic Area.

Jiqing Expressway → G15 Shenhai Expressway → Exit at Zhifu District → Drive east along South Avenue → Turn left at Guomao Building and head north → Towards the seaside → Yantai Mountain. It takes about 15 minutes to arrive after exiting the highway.
