Ling Mountain Julong Cave
Ling Mountain Julong Cave, also known as Ling Mountain Karst Cave, is located at the foot of Lotus Mountain, 2 kilometers northeast of Lingshan Town, Quyang County. The cave is named after its long, dragon-like shape and the numerous dragon-themed formations inside. Julong Cave is divided into three sections: the Ape-Man Ancient Cave, Julong Grand Hall, and Underground Labyrinth, stretching approximately 2,800 meters in length with over a hundred scenic spots and more than a thousand formations. The cave maintains a comfortable temperature year-round, averaging between 17–18°C, making it an ideal destination in all seasons. The Ape-Man Ancient Cave features a 12-meter-long, 3-meter-thick, and 2-meter-deep layer of ash deposits left by ancient hominids. Deep within the cave walls, fossil accumulations of extinct ancient animals from 260,000 years ago have been discovered.
It is said to be the first such discovery in Hebei Province and holds significant importance in Chinese archaeology. Dou Jiande, leader of the peasant uprising at the end of the Sui Dynasty, once praised the cave as “truly a heavenly immortal’s abode” during his stay in Quyang. Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, while on his way to Mount Wutai for a pilgrimage, called it an “underground paradise.” Su Dongpo, when serving as prefect of Dingzhou, visited the cave and inscribed the bold characters “Penglai” (Fairyland) on the stone wall. He also wrote the phrase “This place is truly the Otherworld, where joy and leisure abound” in a smaller cave nearby. The cave blends rich, mythical cultural heritage with mysterious and profound natural landscapes.
The Julong Grand Hall is the main section of the cave, characterized by its divine, wondrous, marvelous, and unique features. Rare and stunning formations such as stone lotuses, stone grapes, and stone ganoderma display exquisite translucence and diverse shapes. Oppositely grown stone shields and pristine moon milk stones are unique to this region in northern China. Particularly fascinating are the delicate helictites, which curl like flowers or twist like dragons or snakes—their formation remains a geological mystery. Major attractions include White Dragon Greets Guests, Julong Wall, Fish Leaps Over the Dragon Gate, Azure Pool, Jade Palace, Dressing Chamber, Rouge Palace, Dragon Sky Window, Sunrise Dragon Pool, Crystal Palace, Sea-Pacifying Pillar, Old Dragon Palace, Little Three Gorges, and Jewelry Dragon Boat. The Underground Labyrinth features winding corridors, crisscrossing main and branch caves, interconnected chambers, and nested cavities—each hiding its own wonder. Stepping into the labyrinth feels like entering a twisting maze of magical passageways, resembling a fairytale world.
