Beifangshui Site

The Beifangshui Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Era: Xia Dynasty, Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Han Dynasty

The Beifangshui Site is located to the west of Beifangshui Village, Gaochang Town, Tang County, covering an area of approximately 110,000 square meters. The site is well-preserved, with rich cultural strata containing a wealth of artifacts, including those from the pre-Shang and Shang periods. The discovery of pre-Shang relics here marks the first such find in the southern part of Baoding. Academia has paid significant attention to this type of site, referring to it as the “Xiayuegezhuang Culture,” a distinct category separate from the pre-Shang cultures of southern Hebei and northern Henan. It holds important value for exploring the origins and migrations of the Shang people.

The Beifangshui Site was also targeted by tomb raiders. When the archaeological team from the Tang County Beifangshui Site, led by researcher Xu Haifeng from the Provincial Cultural Research Institute, arrived on-site, they were in a standoff with the tomb raiders for over a month. In May 2013, it was designated as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by the State Council.
