Memorial Site of Chairman Mao Zedong's Inspection of Beiyuan

The Memorial Site of Chairman Mao Zedong's Inspection of Beiyuan is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

On August 9, 1958, Chairman Mao Zedong inspected Shuitun Village in Beiyuan and issued the directive, "It is still better to establish people's communes." Later, the "Memorial Site of Chairman Mao Zedong's Inspection of Beiyuan" was established at this location. The site features a three-dimensional statue of Chairman Mao Zedong facing south, with a square in front that can accommodate ten thousand people. Behind the statue is a large granite memorial archway inscribed with five golden characters in Chairman Mao’s own handwriting: “People’s Communes Are Good.” On the east and west sides are respectively a reception room, an exhibition room, and a lotus pond. The site also preserves relics from Chairman Mao’s visit: a locust tree (known as the “Happiness Locust Tree”), a shack (now demolished, marked by a stone tablet), and the surrounding rice fields. The total area of the memorial site is 18,000 square meters. It was designated as a provincial-level key cultural relic protection unit in 1977.
