Star Cinema

Star Cinema is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Shandong Province.

Star Cinema is located at No. 291 Weishi’er Road (Street), Zhenxing Street Subdistrict, Huaiyin District, Jinan City. It faces east with its back to the west, has a brick-concrete structure, and features blue brick walls. The main façade’s roof is in the form of a traditional hipped roof, and the building has a “工”-shaped floor plan, extending 50 meters from east to west and 32.3 meters from north to south, covering an area of 1,261 square meters. It has varying heights from one to three stories, with a total construction area of approximately 2,200 square meters. The central section is slightly recessed inward, spanning three bays. On the ground floor, the middle bay serves as the entrance to the lobby, featuring a cantilevered flat-roofed awning platform. The platform entrance is adorned with ornate wooden hanging latticework, adding a rich and elegant decorative touch. The top of the three-story lobby is covered with a single-eave hip-and-gable roof topped with green glazed tiles, and it has rectangular windows that are tall and spacious. The entire building has a simple, classic, and dignified architectural style, is well-preserved, and reflects the design of public facility buildings from the early 1950s after the founding of New China, with distinct characteristics of the era. The predecessor of Star Cinema was Xiaoguanghan Cinema, established in 1904 during the early days of Jinan’s opening as a treaty port, making it the first specialized cinema in Shandong. The original site of Xiaoguanghan Cinema still stands at the southwest corner of the intersection of Jingsan Road and Weier Road. Since 1946, it has undergone several name changes and was officially named Star Cinema in 1950. In 1955, it moved to its current location at the intersection of Jinqi Road and Weishi’er Road (built in 1953). Its interior has since been repurposed and has served as a restaurant, among other uses. In the early 1950s, Jinan constructed a number of public cultural facilities, such as China Cinema, Daguan Cinema, Guangming Cinema, Victory Cinema, and Red Star Cinema. These venues greatly enriched the spiritual and cultural life of the general public during the 1970s and 1980s and made significant contributions to the development of China’s film industry. On December 20, 2013, it was designated as part of the fourth batch of municipal-level cultural heritage sites by the Jinan Municipal Government, and on June 23, 2015, it was listed as part of the fifth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Shandong Province.
