Former Site of the Bacterial Unit of the Japanese Invading Army in China
The former site of the bacterial unit of the Japanese invading army in China is a cultural heritage protection unit of Shandong Province.
The former site of the bacterial unit of the Japanese invading army in China is located at No. 38, Jiuwei Road, Jingshiu Road, Huaiyin District, in the northern part of the courtyard of the Provincial Material Bureau. It is a modern building with a brick-concrete structure and a semi-basement. The building faces south and covers an area of 673 square meters, with three and a half floors above ground and a half basement underground; it is 51.1 meters long from east to west and 15.5 meters wide at the middle from north to south, with sides 12.4 meters wide. The structural form, façade design, interior window and door construction, and façade decoration techniques of this building are largely identical to other extant, clearly documented Japanese-built structures in Shandong Province from the 1930s, and it is considered to be of Japanese architectural style. The Japanese bacterial unit in Jinan was the evil twin of the infamous "Unit 731" of the Japanese invading army in China, with the designation "Unit 1875," also known as the "North China Epidemic Prevention and Water Supply Unit." In 1938, the Japanese bacterial unit in Jinan established a laboratory for bacteriological warfare at the intersection of Jingshiu Road and Jiuwei Road in our city. In 1942, the laboratory was relocated to Jiuwei Road, Jingshiu Road, i.e., the three-story small gray building behind the current office building of the Shandong Provincial Material Group Corporation. Between 1938 and 1945, "Unit 1875" inhumanely conducted experiments on living Chinese people, cultivated large quantities of bacteria, and in August 1943 released a massive amount of cholera bacteria in the Wei River basin in western Shandong, particularly in areas such as Linqing and Wan Tao. After infecting humans and livestock, the Japanese army breached the dyke of the Wei River, causing flooding that drove infected people and animals to flee, spreading and exacerbating the epidemic. This created the largest and deadliest "Operation Cholera Autumn 18 in Western Shandong" in the history of Japanese aggression in China, resulting in over 200,000 deaths. This site was used by the Japanese Unit 1875 bacterial force specifically to poison and dissect the Chinese people. It is a place where the heinously cruel Japanese invading army systematically harmed the Chinese people, serving as a historical witness building to the atrocities committed by the Japanese army. It holds significant historical value and stands as an educational site of great importance in remembering national humiliation. On March 19, 2007, it was designated by the Jinan Municipal Government as part of the third batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units. On June 23, 2015, it was listed by the People's Government of Shandong Province as part of the fifth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units.
