Introduction to the Old City of Cangzhou

Located in Jiuzhou Town, Cang County, approximately 20 kilometers east of Cangzhou City. The city covers an area of about 4.3 million square meters, with ancient city walls about 40 meters wide and a measured perimeter of 7,787 meters. It was first built in the fifth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC), serving as the seat of Fuyang County. The ancient city walls are now incomplete, with only five broken sections remaining on the west and south sides. Within the old city are relics such as the Iron Lion, Iron Coin Treasury (excavated coins include inscriptions such as Chongning, Daguan, Zhenghe, and Xuanhe Tongbao), Iron Furnace, and the site of Kaiyuan Temple, along with rich cultural remains underground. The old city has also been known as Lion City and Recumbent Ox City. It is now listed as a Provincial Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Jiuzhou Town: Jiuzhou Town is located about 17 kilometers northeast of the Cang County government, serving as a regional central town. It governs 14 administrative villages, covers an area of 79.1 square kilometers, and has a total population of 45,000. Jiuzhou Town has been designated as a “Key Town for Reform and Development” by the Hebei Provincial Party Committee and Government, and as one of the “First Batch of Pilot Small Towns for Reform and Development” by the National Development and Reform Commission. In 2014, it was further included in the “National Key Towns List” by seven ministries including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the National Development and Reform Commission.
