The Qianlong Stele in Cang County

The Qianlong Stele in Cang County is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Qianlong Stele is located on the north bank of the Jiedi Sluice on the Jiaohe River in Jiedi Hui Autonomous Township, Cang County. The stele consists of three parts: the base, the main body, and the top. The main body is 1.25 meters wide, 1.79 meters high, and 0.30 meters thick. The top is 1.12 meters high, 1.10 meters wide, and 0.40 meters thick. In the spring of the 36th year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1771 AD), the Qianlong Emperor stopped here to disembark and view the water-dividing river sluice while traveling south, leaving behind an inscription.

The front side of the stele bears an inscription personally written by Emperor Qianlong. Legend has it that during the Qianlong era, as the emperor was traveling south and passed through this area, he had just woken from a nap and asked his minister Liu Yong where they were. Liu Yong, afraid of offending the emperor, did not dare to say they were in Jiedi, and instead said, “This is Xinglong Town (Awakening Dragon Town).” As a result, the Qianlong Emperor disembarked and composed an inscription for the place. For a time, Jiedi was also called “Xinglong Town,” but the name never gained widespread use. To this day, the entire stele remains on the north bank of the Jiedi Sluice river.

Base width: 0.58 meters, length: 1.30 meters, height: 0.75 meters.

Stele top: height 1.12 meters, width 1.10 meters, thickness 0.40 meters.

In the spring of the 36th year of Qianlong’s reign (1771 AD), the Qianlong Emperor disembarked here while traveling south, viewed the water-dividing river sluice, and left behind a five-character long poem in his own handwriting.
