Zuo Qiuming Cultural Scenic Area

Zuo Qiuming, whose given name was Qiu Ming, once served as the Grand Historian of the State of Lu. A native of Dujun Village (present-day Hengyu Village, Shiheng Town, Feicheng City) in the capital of the Lu State during the Spring and Autumn period, he was a historian and essayist. His world-renowned masterpieces, Zuo Zhuan (Commentary of Zuo) and Guoyu (Discourses of the States), are celebrated both in China and abroad. He is honored as the “Ancestor of All Literary Styles” and the “Forefather of Classical Prose.”

Ancient scholars referred to him as a “Sage of Antiquity” and a “Venerable Wise Man,” and the field of historiography regards him as the founding figure of Chinese historical studies. Following initial development, the scenic area has undergone high-standard and high-level restoration of Zuo Qiuming’s tomb, steles, memorial archways, and more, all on a grand scale and highly impressive. The Zuo Qiuming Cultural Memorial Hall houses a large collection of precious cultural relics, which hold significant historical value for researching Zuo Qiuming’s historiographical and cultural legacy.

Shiheng Town: Historical Evolution. Established as Shigou Town during the Song Dynasty, it was renamed Shiheng Town in the early Jin Dynasty after a meteorite fell north of the village and lay horizontally across the land. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), it was renamed Fuyang Township, and in the 19th year of the Republic of China (1930), it became the Seventh District of Feicheng County. In November 1955, it was renamed Shiheng District. In April 1958, Shiheng District was divided into two townships: Shiheng and Hengyu. In September 1958, they merged to form the Shiheng People’s Commune. In January 1984, it reverted to Shiheng District. In November 1985, it was established as Shiheng Town, the name it retains to this day.
