Tomb of Wang Maode

The Tomb of Wang Maode is a cultural heritage site protected by Liaocheng City.

The Tomb of Wang Maode is located in Shimen Village, Shilipu Township, Gaotang County. It dates back to the Yuan Dynasty and is classified as an ancient tomb.

In April 1999, the Tomb of Wang Maode was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site under the protection of Liaocheng City.

Wang Maode (1543–1584)

His courtesy name was Jingfu. He was a native of Chengxi during the Ming Dynasty. In the fifth year of the Longqing era (1571), he passed the imperial examination and became a presented scholar (Jinshi), later appointed as a Hanlin Bachelor (Shujishi) and then as an editor (Bianxiu). In the early years of the Wanli reign, he was involved in compiling the Collected Statutes (Huidian) and the Imperial Daily Record (Qiju Zhu). He was commissioned to confer titles on the Chu vassal. He was nominated as the Academic Administrator (Siye) of the Imperial College (Guozijian). While on his way to the capital, he died in Linqing at the age of 42.

He was known for his integrity and uprightness, which he maintained even after attaining high status. When a wealthy man from Xu sought to bribe him with a thousand taels of silver to avoid legal punishment, he firmly refused. After his death, his family could not afford a proper burial due to poverty. Many local gentry, moved by his moral character, offered financial assistance, but his son, adhering to his father’s last wishes, declined all offers.
