Zhang Menggeng (1909–1926), courtesy name Xiaobai, joined Datong High School in Beiping at the age of 15, where he served as the student council president. Dissatisfied with warlord rule during his school years, he personally listened to speeches by revolutionary forerunner Sun Yat-sen when the latter visited Beiping, and frequently interacted with other pioneers such as Li Dazhao, which inspired his revolutionary ideals. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in March 1925. Later, he also joined the Chinese Nationalist Party as an individual member. In the spring of 1926, when eight foreign powers interfered in China’s internal affairs, he angrily wrote a letter denouncing them. On March 18, over 4,000 students from various schools in Beiping marched to the “Executive Government” of Duan Qirui—he was at the very front of the procession. Duan Qirui ordered his guards to open fire, and Zhang was hit by three bullets. He died on the spot along with 37 others, including Liu Hezhen, at just 17 years old. This incident is historically known as the “March 18th Massacre.” The writer Lu Xun later penned the essay “In Memory of Miss Liu Hezhen,” specifically documenting this event. The Nationalist government later provided a pension to his family. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he was posthumously recognized as a martyr by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
