Tomb of You Ya

The Tomb of You Ya is a cultural heritage protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Tomb of You Ya is located one kilometer northeast of Ren County’s county town. It features an earthen mound ten meters high, approximately thirty meters in length from east to west, and about twenty-five meters from north to south. According to the county annals, during the Cultural Revolution, two accompanying tombs were excavated, yielding artifacts from the Northern and Southern Dynasties period — specifically, Han Dynasty Wu Zhu coins. In 1983, the tomb was designated as a county-level cultural heritage protection site.

The You family was a noble and influential clan. The You surname originates from the Ji clan. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the states of Zhou, Zheng, and Jin all had members bearing the You surname. Historical records identify Zheng’s Prince Yan as the progenitor of the You lineage. From 632 BCE to the fall of the Zheng State (376 BCE), a span of over 250 years, the You family was a prominent and distinguished clan in Zheng. Scholars have noted that “historical texts record: the founding ancestor of the You surname, Ziyu, was the eighth son of Duke Mu of Zheng, the fortieth-generation descendant of the Yellow Emperor, born around 632 BCE during the 20th year of King Xiang of Zhou. He was also known as Xuanzi and was appointed as Prime Minister to Duke Dao of Zheng in 585 BCE.” The Prime Minister of Zheng had two sons: the elder, Chai, and the younger, Chu. The You Ya lineage descends from the elder son, Chai.

You Ya (404–461), courtesy name Bodu, was from Ren County, Guangping (present-day Ren County, Hebei Province). He was a minister during the reign of Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei Dynasty, as well as a legal scholar, and one of the “Three Yous of Ren County.” Among the three, You Ya was the most accomplished in literary talent, You Minggen was highly respected for his virtue, and You Zhao was known for his upright and incorruptible official conduct, with many anecdotes surrounding his governance.

You Ya possessed outstanding literary talent, but most of his works have been lost. Today, only “Discourse on Gao Yun” and “Memorial to the Crown Prince Requesting the Relocation of Criminals to the Frontier” remain, both recorded in the “Book of Wei · Penal Law Annals.” You Ya influenced literature of his time and, more importantly, played a significant role in the reform of the legal and administrative systems of the court.
