Taohongling is a national nature reserve.

Taohongling, one of the famous mountains in Jiangxi Province, is not only a well-known national nature reserve, but also has a long history, many notable historical figures, numerous scattered scenic sites, and a wealth of legends. It is a rare sacred place for sightseeing, deer viewing, summer retreats, and leisure. The Taohongling Reserve features not only the sika deer and their intact supporting ecosystem, but also rich cultural landscapes that complement nearby famous scenic areas such as Mount Lu and Jiuhua Mountain. Developing ecotourism in Taohongling aligns with contemporary trends and offers distinct resource advantages.

Originally named Taohuangling, Taohongling belongs to the Taohong Mountain Range. The reserve is located in the central part of Pengze County, covering an area of 12,500 hectares. Most of the area consists of mountains with elevations between 400–500 meters, and the highest peak, Maoyingwo, reaches 536.6 meters. The terrain is majestic and the landscape is beautiful. The region enjoys abundant sunlight and plentiful rainfall. A total of 633 species of higher plants have been identified and named. In addition to vast stretches of pine, fir, tea, and bamboo forests, there are also many ancient trees over a century old, making it a traditional hub for medicinal herbs. Nearly all the plants growing here are listed in the “Jiangxi Medicinal Plants Directory,” with abundant species including Peucedanum praeruptorum, Bupleurum, Platycodon grandiflorus, and Adenophora tetraphylla. Peucedanum and Bupleurum are locally celebrated as “Peng Peucedanum” and “Peng Bupleurum,” esteemed as “the finest medicinal herbs under heaven.” An old folk rhyme says, “Taohongling lacks only licorice and coptis—its herbal bounty is nearly complete.” This shows that Taohongling is truly a natural herbal garden.

The animal resources of Taohongling are even more distinctive. The reserve is home to 182 species of birds and mammals, including 140 bird species, 42 mammal species, and 484 insect species. Among them, 25 are classified as nationally protected rare animals, and 21 are under provincial protection. The sika deer leads among the mammals, while the Reeves's pheasant leads among the birds—both are Class I nationally protected animals.

Taohongling is the largest habitat of the southern subspecies of wild sika deer in China. The “Pengze County Annals” record that “the mountain is home to elegant birds, rare beasts, and competing beautiful deer.” To protect this endangered and precious species, the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province established the Jiangxi Taohongling Sika Deer Nature Reserve in 1981. Over the past twenty years, the living environment for the sika deer has been effectively protected, and the population has grown from fewer than 60 before the establishment of the reserve to around 400 today. The Taohongling Sika Deer Reserve has now been promoted to a national-level nature reserve.

Taohongling embodies the essence of sun and moon, and is imbued with the spirit of mountains and rivers. Naturally gifted and culturally rich, it has attracted scholars and literati throughout the ages, who have left behind numerous cultural landmarks. Tao Kan of the Jin Dynasty, courtesy name Shiheng, spent his life in official service and served as a military commander for 41 years, achieving numerous military merits and eventually becoming the Governor of Eight Provinces. Emperor Cheng of Jin, recognizing his noble character and high prestige, gifted him a pair of male and female sika deer. After retiring, Tao Kan returned to Xunyang and traveled extensively through the mountains and scenic spots of his hometown. When he arrived at Taohongling, he couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration, “The spiritual essence of the south is all gathered in this mountain—it is truly a fairyland!” He then chose to live in seclusion here, accompanied by the imperial gift of sika deer.
