Site of the "Madang Defense Battle"
The site of the "Madang Defense Battle" during the War of Resistance Against Japan is located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River within Madang Town, Pengze County. In October 1930, Zhou Jianping led the Red Tenth Army in organizing the "Pengze Uprising," first capturing the county seat of Pengze, then taking over the Madang Fortress, achieving the intended goal of "cutting off Yangtze River traffic." Starting in the winter of 1937, the Jiangxi Provincial River Defense Committee mobilized laborers from nine counties to construct and reinforce defensive works at Madang. In June 1938, the 53rd Division of the Kuomintang stationed at the Madang Fortress; on the 24th, the defenders engaged in a day-long fierce battle with Japanese forces, sinking four enemy ships, damaging two, and killing over 500 Japanese soldiers; on the 26th, after intense fighting, the Madang Fortress fell. Comprehensive restoration and expansion are currently underway.
