Tomb of Gao Shanji

The Tomb of Gao Shanji is a cultural relic protection unit of Pengze County.

The Tomb of Gao Shanji is located on Changlinggang Hill, about 1,000 meters east of Gao Village in Huchangwu, Huanghua Township. It lies close to the Pengze–Yangzi Highway. This site serves as a place for people to pay tribute to the national hero and receive patriotic education.

This tomb is a ceremonial burial mound bestowed by decree of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. The couplet on the tombstone, “The banner uniquely highlights the beauty of Yashan; the attire forever lingers fragrant in the secluded grave,” was written by Prince Qing. The heroic deeds of Gao Shanji, a national hero, have been recorded in the archives of the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Gao Shanji was a native of Huanghua, Pengze County. In his youth, he studied under private tutors while accompanying his father at his post, extensively reading classics and histories and known for his kind-hearted nature. In 1875 (the first year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty), he passed the Xiaoheng examination for filial piety and integrity and was recommended for a county-level official position after the metropolitan examination. In the 14th year of Guangxu (1888), he achieved the status of a juren (successful candidate in the imperial examinations at the provincial level) in the Wu Zi examination and later served as a fifth-rank county magistrate. In 1894 (the 20th year of Guangxu), when Japan dispatched troops to Korea, posing a serious threat to China’s security, Gao Shanji volunteered to give up literary pursuits for military service to serve his country.
