Huangling Dasheng Pagoda

Huangling Dasheng Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The Dasheng Pagoda is located in Huangling Township, Pengze County, and was originally named Jiuxian Pagoda. The pagoda was first built during the Tang Dynasty, renovated in the Ming Dynasty, and reconstructed by Tao Zixian during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty. Originally, the "Baohua Temple" was built beside the Tang-era pagoda but was later destroyed by fire multiple times. The Dasheng Pagoda is a brick-and-stone structure, seven stories high with six sides in a pavilion style, built from thick blue bricks stacked without a base, giving the impression that the pagoda rises directly from the ground. The hollow-core structure of the pagoda has relatively slight tapering, giving it a sense of stability and simplicity.

The pagoda stands 17.7 meters tall, with the bottom side measuring 0.73 meters. It has doors on both the north and south sides, and the base contains a stone carving of an eight-sided muscular deity. From the second floor upward, each side of every level has a door shaped like a gui head. The eaves and balconies are constructed with blue bricks in a diamond-shaped pattern, stepped out diagonally. There are three levels of balconies and two layers of eaves, with a single layer of flat bricks between each tier. The six corners of the pagoda body use specially made round bricks at the turns, extending from the second floor to the top. Additionally, below each level’s balcony, flat bricks are layered in neat seams, extending out in three staggered courses resembling a waistband. Inside the pagoda chamber, there were originally wooden floors and staircases, but these no longer exist. The ceiling is a corbelled dome. It is now listed as a Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Jiangxi Province (Fifth Batch).
