Maowan Rice Mill

The Maowan Rice Mill is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangxi Province.

The Maowan Rice Mill is located in Maowan Village, Pengze County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. During a cultural relics survey conducted by the Pengze County cultural relics department in 2004, a rice mill site over 200 years old was discovered in Maowan Village, Madang Town, of the county. The site covers a total area of 36 square meters and consists of three parts: the grinding wheel, the grinding trough, and the grinding pillar, all carved from high-quality red sandstone. The grinding wheel has a diameter of 110 cm, a thickness of 10 cm, and a height of 126 cm, with the trough being 40 cm deep. The grinding pillar is square at the top and bottom but round in the middle, standing 126 cm tall with a diameter of 22 cm. A village covenant for supervising the use of the mill is carved on the upper part of the pillar.

According to villagers of Maowan Village, this mill could process over 200 kilograms of rice at a time. Archaeologists believe that the discovery of such a large and well-preserved rice mill is of great value for studying agricultural production methods and the development of productive forces during the Qing Dynasty.
