Hengfeng Geyuan Scenic Area

Hengfeng Geyuan Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Geyuan Town is located in the Mapan Mountain Basin on the northern extension of the Huaiyu Mountains in Hengfeng County, 35 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Shangrao County to the east, Yiyang County to the west, and is backed by Dexing City to the north. The town gets its name from the wild kudzu that grows abundantly across the hills and its location at the source of a stream. Geyuan Town is a nationally recognized key town and one of Jiangxi Province’s 200 key established towns. It has been successively awarded titles such as “China’s Famous Historical and Cultural Town,” “National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base,” “National Famous Town for Characteristic Landscape Tourism,” “National AAAA-Level Tourist Attraction,” “Provincial-Level Scenic Spot,” “Jiangxi Province’s Charming Town,” and “Jiangxi Province’s Eco-Town.” In early 2017, it was selected as one of the province’s 30 pilot towns for administrative reform in economically developed areas; in early 2018, it was named one of the province’s seven strong agricultural industry towns.

In February 2016, the Geyuan National AAAA-Level Tourist Attraction was officially approved by the Jiangxi Provincial Tourism Attraction Quality Rating Committee. Geyuan is the renowned “Red Provincial Capital” of the Min-Zhe-Jiang-An-Hu Revolutionary Base Area, one of China’s six major revolutionary bases, and the only “Model Soviet Province” among them. The area boasts abundant red tourism resources, including one national key cultural relics protection unit consisting of five scenic spots, and over 50 well-preserved revolutionary heritage sites within the former base area. Among these, Lenin Park is the first park in Chinese history. Additionally, Geyuan Town features three well-preserved ancient streets with the charm of Ming and Qing dynasty market towns, the former site of Baishi Academy, the Wannian Stage, and other historic and cultural landmarks rich in old-world character. Natural attractions include Little Huangshan, Xianyan Cave, and Lion Rock, as well as ecological landscapes such as ten-thousand-mu kudzu fields and a 100,000-mu oil tea base. With such a wealth of tourism resources, the area attracts over 100,000 visitors each year for leisure, sightseeing, and travel.

Hengfeng County is fully committed to promoting Geyuan’s “Former Sites of the Min-Zhe-Jiang-An-Hu Revolutionary Base Area” as a flagship red tourism brand. It has established a leading group for red tourism projects, actively sought red tourism development initiatives, and prioritized the protection of red tourism resources and scenic area development as key construction projects. A total investment of 1.214 billion yuan has been allocated for red tourism development. Leveraging Geyuan’s two prestigious titles—“China’s Famous Historical and Cultural Town” and “National Patriotic Education Base”—the county applied to relevant national departments and secured project funding exceeding 200 million yuan. The “Chinese Soviet Min-Zhe-Jiang-An-Hu Revolutionary Base Area Former Sites Scenic Area Management Committee” was set up, with special funds earmarked to enhance the protection and management of cultural relics and heritage sites, as well as to advance comprehensive tourism planning and development. The focus is on creating a distinctive tourism industry that integrates “red (revolutionary), green (ecological), and ancient (historic)” elements.
