Hongwu Branch School

The Hongwu Branch School is a classic red tourism destination and a national defense education base.

The “Fifth Branch School of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army,” formerly known as the Xinjiang Military and Political School. In 1931, it relocated from Fangjiadun, Yiyang to Geyuan Town and was renamed the Peng-Yang Military and Political School. In early 1933, it was renamed the Fifth Branch School of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. Presidents who served included Zou Qi, Jiang Feng, and Peng Ganchen; political commissars who served included Fang Zhimin, Shao Shiping, Shu Yi, Tu Zhenong, and Liu Ding. Since its establishment, the military school trained a large number of military backbone talents, totaling over 1,500. Senior generals of the Chinese military who graduated from the school include Rao Shoukun, Wu Kehua, Fang Zhen, Huang Ligui, and Hong Tao. The Hongwu Branch School is one of the earlier military schools established by our Party.

The historical site was renovated in 1986 and 1991 with funding from the Provincial Department of Culture. In 1987, an auxiliary exhibition room for the Hongwu Branch School was added at the site, providing a comprehensive introduction to the school’s history and teaching/training practices. It is now a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. In 2007, it was designated as a “Jiangxi Provincial National Defense Education Base” by the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province.

Geyuan Town: Geyuan Town is located in the northern part of Hengfeng, bordering Yiyang, Dexing, and Shangrao counties. It is 35 kilometers from the county seat and currently administers 8 village committees, 1 forest farm, 1 neighborhood committee, 91 natural villages, with a population of 31,000. The town covers an area of 115 square kilometers, including 118,000 mu of forested land, of which 50,000 mu are oil-tea camellia forests; cultivated land spans 16,000 mu, including 14,000 mu of paddy fields. The town has 2 Party general branches, 24 Party branches, and 46 Party groups, with a total of 777 Party members. It serves as a regional central town in northern Hengfeng County.
