The Tomb of Zhao Ruyu in Yugan

The Tomb of Zhao Ruyu in Yugan is a cultural relic protection unit of Shangrao City.

The Tomb of Zhao Ruyu in Yugan is located on Diaofeng Mountain in Zhangmuqiao Village, Fenggang Township. The tomb stands 6.5 meters tall, has a diameter of 30 meters, and covers an area of approximately 2,000 square meters. It is surrounded by trees, with guardian beasts and other stone figures at the front. At the western foot of Diaofeng Mountain, there are stone sculptures of an ox and a horse. During the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, the imperial court issued an edict to protect the tomb of Zhao Ruyu, the Southern Song Dynasty’s prime minister.

Zhao Ruyu (1140 – February 20, 1196), courtesy name Zizhi, was a native of Yugan, Raozhou. He was a renowned statesman and scholar of the Southern Song imperial clan, the eighth-generation descendant of Emperor Taizong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, and the seventh-generation descendant of Prince Gongxian of Han, Zhao Yuanzuo.

Zhao Ruyu harbored great ambitions from an early age. In 1166, during the Qiandao era of Emperor Xiaozong of Song, he achieved the top rank in the imperial examinations and was appointed as a junior official in the Ningguo military command. Later summoned to serve in the imperial library, he was made a Corrector in the Palace Library. He successively served as a Drafting Editor at the Jiyi Hall and as the military governor of Fujian. In 1191, he was recalled to serve as Minister of Personnel, then promoted to Privy Councilor, though he declined the position. Following the death of Emperor Xiaozong, with Emperor Guangzong incapacitated by illness and unable to preside over the funeral, Han Tuozhou was dispatched to seek Empress Dowager Xiansheng’s approval for the imperial succession... Fenggang Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Yugan County. It was established as Fenggang Commune in 1959 and restructured as a township in 1984. Located in the western part of the county, on the southern bank of the western branch of the Xin River, it is 14 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 33 square kilometers with a population of 23,000, it administers ten village committees: Fenggang, Baijiaxu, Liwan, Fujiannong, Xiping, Haozui, Qinhu, Nanping, Youping, and Dawei. The western branch of the Xin River flows along the northern boundary into Poyang Lake. The main agricultural products are rice and asparagus.
