Handan Tianqi Temple

Handan Tianqi Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Tianqi Temple is located in Wuzhuang Village, Huaguan Ying Township, Cixian County, on the east side of the 6-kilometer southern extension of Handan’s Zhonghua Road. It is a municipal-level key cultural relics protection unit. The temple was originally built during the Tang Dynasty at the eastern part of the village. During the Yuan Dynasty, it was relocated to its current site due to changes in the course of the Zhang River. The temple has long been renowned throughout history, with expansions carried out in successive dynasties. Its most glorious period was during the Ming Dynasty, celebrated for features such as “three gates aligned in view and three halls standing side by side.” The mountain gate, bell tower, corridors, and main hall were scattered across the landscape, complemented by the shade of banyan trees, presenting a resplendent and spectacular sight. Later, due to various reasons, it was leveled to the ground, leaving only ruins behind.

Since the reform and opening-up, with economic development and improvements in people's living standards, the springtime of cultural tourism has also arrived. After 1990, the Tianqi Temple ruins were successively designated as county and municipal-level key cultural relics protection units. Restoration projects aimed at reviving the original appearance of the Tianqi Temple cultural heritage have been carried out by the township and village authorities. Over the past decade, the scale has grown from small to large, the layout has gradually become more standardized, and the architecture has become increasingly magnificent. It has now taken shape as a Ming- and Qing-style architectural complex that integrates Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian cultures, characterized by “central axis symmetry with Eastern Taoism and Western Buddhism.” The Taoist structures within the temple include: the Jade Emperor Hall, Yuansheng Hall, Tianqi King Hall (dedicated to Huang Feihu), Yanzhen Hall, Grandma Hall, and other halls. The Buddhist structures include: the Heavenly King Hall, Stone Buddha Hall, Mahavira Hall, Three Great Bodhisattva Hall, and Ksitigarbha Hall.

The temple is set to become a pure land sanctuary where “jade palaces emerge amidst the clouds, and the sound of bells drifts gently through the pine and cypress groves.” This premium cultural tourism landmark will make its dazzling debut, gradually forming a new cultural tourism pattern in Handan — “Huangliang Dream in the north, Tianqi Temple in the south.”
