The Nine-Dragon Locust Tree Scenic Area is located 4 kilometers west of She County in Hebei Province, adjacent to the Huaxia Ancestral Temple – the Goddess Nuwa Palace – to the west, and facing the former site of the 129th Division Headquarters (a nationally renowned cultural landmark) across the river to the south. Covering an area of 150 acres, the scenic area combines both cultural and natural attractions.

The scenic area centers around a thousand-year-old locust tree, which earned its name due to its ancient, gnarled branches that resemble nine dragons. With a trunk circumference of about 50 meters and a height of 39 meters, the tree is majestic and considered a marvel, often hailed as the “No. 1 Locust Tree under Heaven.” The mysteries of the ancient tree lie within — the Nine Rooms and Eighteen Pavilions inspire insight, the Historical Relics Pavilion offers reflection on the past and present, the Wealth Prosperity Pavilion attracts fortune and blessings, the Peace Pavilion is for praying for smooth sailing, and the Longevity Pavilion promotes health and long life. The entire tree features deep roots and sturdy branches, with walkways encircling the exterior of the trunk. These high, steep, and dizzying paths are awe-inspiring, embodying the essence of “wonder, uniqueness, danger, and magnificence.” The bell and drum towers echo each other from afar, fully showcasing the charm of ancient temples. Among them, the Locust Fairy Cave is the most famous. The spirit of the Locust Fairy brings blessings and shelters the land, attracting numerous worshippers who come here to pray.

This scenic area integrates natural landscapes, historical legends, folk culture, and revolutionary education. Lush trees and blooming flowers create a richly layered, rustic yet enchanting scene. At the foot of the mountain, the Qingzhang River — the largest river in She County — flows around the locust tree. Within the river lies the naturally formed Nine-Dragon Pool, where shimmering waters blend seamlessly with the sky. Visitors can enjoy boat rides, fishing, or speeding across the water on motorboats, making it a truly captivating experience. Willow trees line the banks, and green grass covers the ground, offering a fresh and serene environment. The ancient locust tree, with its long history, has inspired many touching legends, such as Emperor Wen of Han enjoying the shade of the tree, Li Zicheng’s army being besieged near the tree, Empress Dowager Cixi treating an illness barefoot under the tree, and the tree providing relief to people during famine years. The legendary sword of King Chuang, left behind at this site, has become the “treasure of the locust tree.” These historical tales add a layer of magic to the Nine-Dragon Locust Tree. Additionally, a J-7 fighter jet and a Soviet T-3 tank are on display at the scenic area, allowing visitors to appreciate the beautiful scenery while also witnessing military might and reliving the glorious years of revolution.
