Introduction:

The Jiulongjing Water Conservancy Scenic Area combines a variety of uniquely shaped Dragon Wells, spectacular potholes, and pristine natural landscapes. Lush green mountains line both banks, while streams babble through the valley. The water flows like silk, connecting nine Dragon Wells—Bat Well, Golden Pig Well, Guanyin Well, Dragon Gate Well, Yin-Yang Well, Jar Well, Long River Well, Double Heart Well, and Sun Well—blending motion and stillness, grace and mystery. The stream is made remarkable by its stones, with the riverbed taking on diverse forms and the potholes exhibiting unique styles, creating a picturesque scene at every turn. The stones come alive with the water, while cascading waterfalls and unfathomable Dragon Wells leave visitors in awe of nature’s incredible craftsmanship.

When people mention Dragon Wells, they usually refer to naturally formed round or oval pools in streams that never dry up even in severe droughts and whose depths are immeasurable. Ancient people believed these wells were connected to the sea and inhabited by dragons, hence the name. The dragon is a mythical creature in Chinese legend—capable of transformation, controlling rain and clouds, and benefiting all things. It is regarded as the leader of all scaled creatures and the foremost of the Four Divine Beasts. Legend has it that when Laozi was born, “ten thousand cranes soared in the sky and nine dragons spouted water to bathe his sacred body, and where the dragons emerged, nine wells were formed.” The Ming Dynasty scholar Li Dongyang wrote about the “Nine Sons of the Dragon” in his work Huailutang Collection. These enchanting legends spark our curiosity and desire for exploration, while the ancient, artistic riverbeds unfold like vivid scroll paintings before us. The Bat Well, with its “hanging springs and waterfalls, and flying bats,” the Golden Pig Well, with its “lifelike golden pig that seems to welcome visitors,” and the Guanyin Well, with its “exquisite beauty and noble grace,” all bring a sense of harmony between humans and nature. You can almost smell the fragrance of green mountains and clear waters in the breeze, feeling as if you’ve become part of the scenery. The Dragon Gate Well, where “everything blends seamlessly, bringing a sense of ease,” the Yin-Yang Well, representing “nature’s creation of opposing forces,” and the Jar Well, which “inspires awe with its deep mystery,” are all masterpieces crafted by nature. The Long River Well, with its “unfathomable depth and crystal-clear water,” the Double Heart Well, where “stone and water form a unified whole, flying together like wings,” and the Sun Well, resembling “the sun and radiating the spirit of heaven and earth,” are like natural ink paintings—dynamic and static, expressive and poetic. No matter where you stand in the scenic area, your mind will wander, your heart will be refreshed, and you’ll marvel at nature’s eternal vitality and charm.

Administrative Affiliation and Transportation: Shishan Village is located in the southern part of Zhaoyang Township, 21 kilometers from Zherong County and 11 kilometers from the township government seat. It borders Xikou Village to the east, Qianlou Village to the north, Xianhou Village of Dongyuan Township to the west, and Panxi Town of Fuding City to the south.

Village and Residents: Shishan Village currently has 280 households and 1,141 residents, comprising eight natural villages—Yangbin New Village, Yangtou, Batou, Woli, Hubei, Fuqiangli, Gongping, and Batouli—and 12 villager groups.
