Location: Shuangcheng Town, Zherong County

Description: Shuangcheng Fortress is the collective name for the Upper City and Lower City of Zherong. The Upper City was built in the Jiwei year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1559), while the Lower City was constructed in the 21st year of the Zhizheng reign during the Yuan Dynasty (1361). The Lower City currently retains the East Gate (Xuanyin Gate) and two sections of the eastern city wall—southern and northern—totaling 226 meters. The Upper City’s city wall has several surviving sections on the east, west, and north sides, with a total length of 525.7 meters. Built along the water, the fortress walls feature a running track on the inner top, crenellations on the outer side, walls nearly 5 meters thick, and heights ranging from 4.5 to 10 meters. Fully functional, it represents the main model of fortification and castle construction in eastern Fujian and coastal areas during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Protected area: A 10-meter radius in all directions (front, back, left, right) around the remaining sections of the wall.

In 2009, Shuangcheng Fortress was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People's Government of Fujian Province.

Shuangcheng Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Zherong County and the seat of the county government. Established as Chengguan Commune in 1975, it was restructured as Chengguan Town in 1981 and later renamed Shuangcheng Town. Located in the northern part of the county, it covers an area of 10.6 square kilometers with a population of 19,000. National Highway 104 passes through the town. It administers four village committees: Shangcheng, Beijie, Nanjie, and Xiping, as well as three neighborhood committees: Chengbei, Chengnan, and Chengxi. Industries include pharmaceuticals, stone slab production, and purple clay pottery. The main agricultural products are rice and wheat.
