Lion Rock

The rock features a cave that can accommodate dozens of people. Inside, there are crisscrossing passages, towering stone pillars, hanging stalactites, and dripping springs. Lion Rock is located in Yanqian Town, Wuping County, Longyan City, Fujian Province. It is a karst cave landform and is named for its resemblance to a lion. Historically known as Nan’an Rock, it was once listed in the Dictionary of Scenic Spots in China. Upon ascending Lion Rock and entering the cave entrance, you will find the Ancient Buddha Hall, where three ancient Dharma Kings are enshrined in the center. The cave walls are inscribed with lines by Li Gang, Prime Minister of the Northern Song Dynasty: “The spiritual cave’s clear waters are fit for immortals; the ancient Buddha’s abode in Nan’an stands timelessly.” Behind the Ancient Buddha Hall, a winding path leads through the “First Cave Under Heaven,” where cool breezes blow and the cave houses many naturally formed stone sculptures such as lions, elephants, monkeys, and turtles. The words “Human Realm’s Fairy Grotto” are carved on the cave ceiling, said to have been inscribed by Emperor Qianlong. In front of Lion Rock lies a natural spring-fed lake called “Jiao Lake,” so clear it mirrors the surroundings. “Moonrise over Jiao Pool” is a famous nighttime spectacle here.
