A Book and a House

Speaking of Lin Yaohua, you might hear him referred to as a renowned Chinese ethnologist, anthropologist, sociologist, historian, and ethnic educator—hailed as a master of his generation and an academic giant, on par with Fei Xiaotong—but behind these many titles and accolades lies another identity that is little known—“the son of Gutian.”

Fengting Village in Gutian County is the hometown of the world-famous anthropologist and ethnologist Lin Yaohua. This village gained international recognition in the academic field of anthropology thanks to Lin Yaohua’s celebrated work, *Golden Wings*, and has had significant scholarly influence.

Later, Gutian established the Lin Yaohua Research Association and organized the restoration of Lin Yaohua’s former residence. In October last year, the Lin Yaohua Residence—Golden Wings House—was completed. As a rural former residence museum, this building features the typical architectural style of a wealthy southern Chinese farmhouse, with a six-bay, three-courtyard, terraced layout, two wings, three floors, and a watchtower. It recreates the era depicted in the book *Golden Wings*.

Stepping into Golden Wings House, the grand stone archway, classic traditional eaves and roof ornaments, stone-paved hall and courtyard, exquisitely carved doors and windows, along with a rich array of rustic farming tools, tables, chairs, and artifacts all evoke the prosperity of the original “Golden Wings House” and convey the serenity of this “Oriental temple.”
