Red Army Well

The Red Army Well is a classic site of red tourism.

The Red Army Well is located in Kaitou, Shangjie Village, Yangxi Town, Meilie District.

In January 1934, during the battle to capture Sha County, a detachment of the Red Army’s Eastern Army advanced toward the south of Sha County. At that time, part of the Red Army’s Eastern Army was stationed in the homes of villagers in Shangjie. Amid the intense military operations, the Red Army soldiers not only refrained from taking anything from the villagers but also helped them with tasks within their power, such as carrying water and chopping firewood. They shared a well with the villagers, and to solve the drinking water problem, the Red Army expanded the well. To commemorate this unforgettable history and honor the deep bond between the army and the people, the villagers named the well the Red Army Well.

The Red Army Well was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The wellhead is circular, with a diameter of 1.38 meters at the top and approximately 2.5 meters at the bottom. It has a structure that is narrower at the top and wider at the bottom, with a depth of 8 meters, serving a population of over 1,000 people.

Yangxi Town: Yangxi Town is 12 kilometers from downtown Sanming. It governs 8 administrative villages. National Highway 205, the Yingxia Railway, and the Shaxi River run through the town.

Historical Evolution: In 1997, the area covered 72 square kilometers with a population of 9,000, governing 8 village committees: Xinjie, Shangjie, Yangkouzai, Xiaokeng, Lianmao, Yandou, Baofanfang, and Xiakeng. In 2003, it governed 8 administrative villages with a population of 8,500 and an area of 72 square kilometers.
