Former Site of the Revolutionary Committee of Changting County
The Former Site of the Revolutionary Committee of Changting County is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.
The revolutionary sites in Changting are located in Changting County in western Fujian Province and were established during the Second Revolutionary Civil War.
In early 1929, Mao Zedong and [name redacted] led the Fourth Red Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army from Jinggangshan to southern Jiangxi and western Fujian. In March, the Fourth Army won the Battle of Changlingzhai, captured the city of Changting, and established the first red political power in western Fujian—the Provisional Revolutionary Committee of Changting County. By May, the areas controlled by the Red Army had expanded to five counties, covering hundreds of square miles. Through continuous development, the revolutionary bases in western Fujian and southern Jiangxi gradually connected, and by the second half of 1930, they formed the Central Revolutionary Base. The Changting Revolutionary Base was part of the western Fujian base and later became an important component of the Central Revolutionary Base.
The revolutionary sites in Changting mainly include the former sites of the Provincial Soviet Government, Gospel Hospital, Yunxiang Pavilion, Zhanggeng Villa, and the Chinese Christian Church.
The former site of the Provincial Soviet Government is located on Zhaozheng Road in downtown Changting. Originally the examination hall of the Tingzhou Prefecture across various dynasties, it was rebuilt in 1857. The entire wooden structure covers over 3,000 square meters and includes buildings such as the Zhu Zi Ancestral Hall and Longshan Academy. During the Republic of China period, it was converted into the Seventh Provincial Middle School of Fujian. On March 18, 1932, the First Congress of Workers, Peasants, and Soldiers of Fujian Province was held here, establishing the Provincial Soviet Government of Fujian. Afterward, the Soviet government operated from this location.
The Gospel Hospital is situated at the foot of Beishan Mountain in downtown Changting. Originally a church hospital, it is a single-story wooden building divided into front and back courtyards. In 1927, some wounded soldiers from the Nanchang Uprising were treated here. In 1929, Comrade Mao Zedong also convalesced at the Gospel Hospital. From 1931 to 1933, Fu Lianzhang established the Central Red Nurses School and the Central Red Medical School at the hospital and procured medicine and medical equipment for the Red Army. In 1933, the Gospel Hospital was renamed the “Central Red Hospital” and relocated to Ruijin, Jiangxi.
Yunxiang Pavilion is located on Wushi Mountain in downtown Changting. Originally named “Qingyin Pavilion” and later “Jijing Pavilion,” it was rebuilt into a traditional Chinese pavilion-style building in 1838, overlooking the Ting River. In March 1929, when the Fourth Red Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army first entered Fujian, the first government body of the western Fujian Revolutionary Base—the Revolutionary Committee of Changting—was established here.
Zhanggeng Villa is located on the banks of the Ting River in eastern downtown Changting. In 1929, when the Fourth Red Army was stationed in Changting, its headquarters and political department were set up here. The offices and former residences of Mao Zedong, [name redacted], and Chen Yi are still preserved.
The Chinese Christian Church served as the base of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party during the Second Revolutionary Civil War. When [name redacted] came to Changting to carry out revolutionary activities, he stayed here. (National Cultural Heritage Administration)
