Tingzhou Examination Hall

The Tingzhou Examination Hall is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Tingzhou Examination Hall was first built during the Song Dynasty, featuring a courtyard-style structure covering an area of over ten thousand square meters, consisting of a gate tower, open courtyard, main hall, rear hall, side rooms, and several connected bungalows. During the Song Dynasty, the site served as the military garrison office of Tingzhou, in the Yuan Dynasty it became the guard headquarters, and in the Ming and Qing Dynasties it was established as an examination hall for local scholar candidates from the eight counties of Tingzhou to take imperial examinations. A renowned scholar of the Qing Dynasty, Ji Yun, chief editor of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries, once presided over imperial examinations here and stayed on the premises. The hall also houses two rare and ancient cypress trees from the Tang Dynasty, towering and lush, forming a spectacular sight. The Tingzhou Examination Hall hosts permanent exhibitions such as "Exhibition on the Hakka History of Tingzhou," "Exhibition on the Revolutionary History of Changting – the First Capital of the Fujian Soviet Area," and "Exhibition on the Glorious Achievements of Qu Qiubai." It also periodically holds various thematic exhibitions.

In 1988, it was designated by the State Council as part of the third group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units and is now the "Changting Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall."

Zhang Dingcheng (1898–1981) was one of the main founders of the Western Fujian Revolutionary Base. He was from Yongding, Fujian. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1927. During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, he participated in and led armed uprisings of peasants in counties including Longyan, Yongding, and Shanghang. During the Liberation War, he served as commander of the Central China Military Region. While working in Shandong, he held positions such as Standing Committee Member and Secretary of the Organization Committee of the East China Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
