The Former Revolutionary Sites of Changting
The Former Revolutionary Sites of Changting are a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a key cultural relics protection unit in China, and a classic red tourism destination.
The Former Revolutionary Sites of Changting are located in Changting County. Established as Tingzhou in the 24th year of the Kaiyuan era during the Tang Dynasty (736 AD), Changting was one of the five major prefectures in Fujian. From the height of the Tang Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, Changting served as the administrative center of various prefectures, counties, circuits, and fu. Among them, the ancient and atmospheric Ming and Qing dynasty street, Diantou Street, is recognized as one of “China’s Top Ten Historical and Cultural Streets.” Changting is the most representative gathering place of the Hakka people, known as the “World Capital of the Hakka” and served as the economic and cultural center of the Central Soviet Area during the Second Revolutionary Civil War, earning the title “Little Shanghai of the Red Era.”
Changting is world-renowned as the capital of the Hakka people, brimming with vibrant Hakka culture. Its long history has left the city with a uniquely charming Hakka heritage: including Hakka folk culture, Hakka costume culture, Hakka architectural culture, Hakka local culture, and Hakka culinary culture. Hakka cuisine from Changting is famous both in China and abroad. It is honored as the “Hometown of Hakka Cuisine in China” and the “Famous Food City of Fujian Province,” often praised with the saying “Eat in Changting.”
Known as the “Home of the Red Army, Land of the Red Revolution, and Place Where the Red Flag Never Fell”—the “Three Reds”—Changting is one of China’s 21 revolutionary holy sites. It was the economic and cultural center of the Central Soviet Area during the Second Revolutionary Civil War, earning the nickname “Little Shanghai of the Red Era.” It is also the Long March departure point farthest from the final destination, and one of the important birthplaces of Mao Zedong Thought. Commander Zhu De once remarked about Changting: “Indeed, Changting was a crucial turning point in the Chinese revolution.” Prominent proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Liu Shaoqi all carried out great revolutionary activities here. Early Party leaders such as Qu Qiubai and the First National Congress delegate He Shuheng were martyred in Changting. The magnificent revolutionary history has bestowed upon Changting many historic firsts, including the former site of the “Provincial Soviet,” the former site of the “Provincial Committee,” Xinggeng Villa, Gospel Hospital, the Qu Qiubai Memorial Park, and the First Village of the Long March—dozens of classic national red tourism sites (attractions).
